- In the movie Asher and Fiona's jobs are different. In the book Asher's job was Recreation director and in the movie his job was drone pilot. The same with Fiona in the book her job was caretaker of the old and in the movie her job was Nurturer.
- Memories: Jonas receives memories that are similar to the book but different.
- Drone: In the movie Asher was chasing Jonas in a drone to get rid of him but that did not happen in the book.
Character Development Differences:
- Jonas's Mother: Jonas's mother was nice at the beginning and when Jonas runs away she gets more strict and harsh.
- Chief Elder: In the movie the Chief Elder was a bigger villain and was more strict with the rules than she was in the beginning at the ceremonies.
- Asher: In the movie Asher avoids Jonas and Fiona and in a way unfriended them and in the book he was friends with them from the beginning to the end.
Theme Differences:
- Relationship: In the movie there was a relationship between Jonas and Fiona and in the book they were not tin a relationship but they were very good friends.
- Sharing Memories: In the movie Jonas could share his memories with others like Fiona, Lily, and Gabriel. Where as in the book Jonas could only share his memories with Gabriel since he was " Like" him.
- Technology: In the movie the technology was more advanced than in the book. There were drones and other advanced technologies that were not in the book.
